When you connect external monitors, your laptop may automatically switch audio to the monitor’s speakers. Follow the steps below to ensure your main audio remains on your laptop.

Mac

Step 1: Open System Settings

  • Click the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your screen.
  • Select System Settings (or System Preferences).

Step 2: Go to Sound Settings

  • In System Settings, click Sound.
  • Then select the Output tab to see a list of audio devices.

Step 3: Select Your Laptop Speakers

  • Click on your internal speakers (often labeled β€œMacBook Speakers”) to set them as the main output.

Step 4: Test Audio

  • Play audio from any app (like music or YouTube) to confirm it’s coming from your laptop speakers, not the monitor.

Tip: macOS remembers this setting, so your laptop speakers will stay as the default even after reconnecting external monitors.

Windows

1. Open System Settings – Click the Start menu and select Settings.

2. Go to Sound Settings – Click System > Sound.

3. Select Output Device – Under Output, choose your laptop speakers (or desired main audio device) from the dropdown.

Step 4: Test Audio- Play audio to confirm it’s coming from your laptop speakers, not the monitor.

Tip: For more control, go to Control Panel > Sound, where you can disable the monitor’s audio output entirely if needed.
