Which USB-C Ports Are Compatible with the Tri-Screen 3 and Dual-Screen 3?

Not all USB-C ports are the same — some can send video to an external screen, and some can't. This guide explains which ports work with each Xebec product and what to do if your port isn't compatible.

The short answer

Your USB-C port can drive an external screen without any adapter if it supports one of the following:

  • DisplayPort (sometimes shown as "DP" or "DP Alt Mode")
  • Thunderbolt 3
  • Thunderbolt 4

If your USB-C port does not support any of the above, you will need the Tri-Screen 3 Mac Adapter.

How each product handles adapter requirements

Tri-Screen 3Dual-Screen 3
Mac — DisplayPort or Thunderbolt 3+Adapter required ❌ ✅ No adapter needed
Mac — USB-C only / USB 3.2 / Gen 1Adapter required ❌Adapter required ❌
Windows/Linux/ChromeOS — DisplayPort or Thunderbolt 3+✅ No adapter needed✅ No adapter needed
Windows/Linux/ChromeOS — USB-C only / USB 3.2 / Gen 1Adapter required ❌ Adapter required ❌
USB-A ports onlyAdapter + USB-A to USB-C converter needed ❌ Adapter + USB-A to USB-C converter needed ❌

Why does the Tri-Screen 3 always require the adapter for Macs? The Tri-Screen 3 drives two external screens at the same time, which requires more than a standard USB-C DisplayPort connection can handle on a Mac. The Dual-Screen 3 only drives one external screen, so a capable USB-C port is enough on its own.

What to look for on your laptop

Some laptops label their ports directly on the chassis. Look for small symbols or text printed next to the USB-C port:

What you see next to USB-CCompatible without adapter?
"DP", "DisplayPort", or "DP Alt Mode"✅ Yes
A lightning bolt symbol (Thunderbolt 3 or 4)✅ Yes
"USB-C" only, "USB 3.2", or "Gen 1"❌ No — adapter needed
No USB-C port at all (USB-A only)❌ No — adapter + USB-A to USB-C converter needed

How to check your port specs online

If your laptop doesn't have labels next to the ports, here's how to look it up:

Step 1: Find your laptop's model name.

  • Mac: Click the  logo at the top left → "About This Mac." You'll see something like MacBook Air (M2, 2023).
  • Windows: Click the Start button → type "System Information" → press Enter. Look for your model name, such as Dell XPS 13 9310 or HP Spectre x360.
  • You can also check the sticker on the bottom of your laptop.

Step 2: Search your model + "specs" online.

Type something like:

  • MacBook Air M2 2023 technical specifications
  • Dell XPS 13 9310 specs

Step 3: Find the ports section.

Look for a section called "Ports," "Connections," or "I/O" in the spec sheet.

Step 4: Read what it says next to USB-C.

  • DisplayPort, DP Alt Mode, or Thunderbolt 3+ → Compatible, no adapter needed (except for Tri-Screen 3 Mac users — see table above).
  • USB-C, USB 3.2, or Gen 1 with no mention of DisplayPort or Thunderbolt → You need the Tri-Screen 3 Mac Adapter.

Still not sure?

No problem. Just contact us with your laptop's exact model name (for example, Lenovo Yoga 7i 14-inch, 2023) and which Xebec product you have, and we'll confirm exactly what you need.
